On April 10, 2004, in a test match against England, Lara played an unbeaten knock of 400 runs which is the most by any batsman in the format. He faced 582 balls and bashed the English bowlers for 43 fours and 4 sixes

Former Australian batsman Matthew Hayden comes second on the list. Facing 437 deliveries against Zimbabwe in a test match, Hayden registered the second-highest score in test cricket history. During his 437-ball knock, he accumulated 380 runs including 38 fours and 11 sixes
