When Prasad Mhatre was forced to quit school due to his near-cripple state in 2006, his future looked quite bleak. But after his total hip replacement surgery on January 22, nearly a decade later, he is finally able to stand on his two feet and hopes to stride towards a brighter future.

The 23-year old resident of Alibaug suffered from ankylosing spondylitis &ndash; a chronic form of spondylitis marked by impaired mobility, since 2005. During initial prognosis for his severe pain around the hips, the doctors were unable to diagnose his ailment. &ldquo;At the time, we were informed by the doctors that there was some liquid accumulation around his left hip that was a probable cause for his pain,&rdquo; said Krishna Mhatre, his father.

He underwent an operation in the same year at a private hospital. Within a year, however, his condition became worse, to the point that he was unable to sit or stand properly. His left leg shifted at an odd angle and he was unable to bend his knee.
While the young man was still able to walk small distances with support, his disability disheartened him and he decided to quit school in Std X. &ldquo;The pain reduced after a surgery, but I was unable to lead a normal life,&rdquo; he said.
After almost eight years of leading an inactive life, a family friend referred him to KEM Hospital in Parel where he met Dr Pradeep Bhosale, the head of the hospital&rsquo;s orthopaedic department. According to Dr Bhosale, although the condition is quite common among males, it usually remains undiagnosed. &ldquo;In Prasad&rsquo;s case as well, his previous doctor was unable to diagnose his condition and the delay led to fusion of bones of his left hip.&rdquo;
After his hip replacement surgery on January 22, Prasad is now able to walk without any support. Dr Bhosale added, &ldquo;This surgery was especially challenging as the nerves and blood vessels were completely stuck to the joint. We imported a ceramic joint that will help him walk normally again.&rdquo;
While the young man is now undergoing physiotherapy sessions, he is already looking forward to re-appearing for his Std X exams and completing his education. &ldquo;I hope to get a good job after completing my Std XII exams,&rdquo; smiled Prasad.
