Mumbai weather update: Possibility of moderate rainfall in city and suburbs

At 0800 hrs today the weather forecast for Mumbai predicts moderate rain in the city and suburbs according to a realese by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Residents are advised to be prepared for wet conditions and exercise caution while commutingThe tide timings for today are as followsHigh Tide1101 hrs 432 meters2252 hrs 376 metersDuring high tide there is a possibility of increased water levels in coastal areas which may result in waterlogging in lowlying regions Citizens residing near the coastline are urged to stay alert and avoid venturing close to the sea during these periodsLow Tide1701 hrs 194 metersThe low tide offers temporary relief from high water levels However with the forecast of moderate rain residents should remain cautious as waterlogging can occur in susceptible areasOn the next day 01st August 2023 the low tide is scheduled at 0454 hrs with a height of 035 metersThe city experienced light rainfall in the past 24 hours from 30th July 2023 0800 hrs to 31st July 2023 0800 hrs with the following average rainfall details in different regionsCity 0275 mmEastern Suburbs ES 1243 mmWestern Suburbs WS 1042 mmThe rainfall data indicates that the eastern suburbs received the highest amount of rainfall during this periodMeanwhile a good spell of rain has pushed the water stock in lakes to over 74 per cent but the BMC is taking its time to withdraw the 10 per cent water cut With the forecast of a dry August the civic body has decided to wait for another week before taking any decision in this regardThere are seven lakes that supply water to the city Two are within city limits Tulsi and Vihar while five are on the outskirts Bhatsa Tansa Upper Vaitarna Middle Vaitarna and Modak Sagar with a combined capacity to store 1447 lakh million litres of water All the lakes except Bhatsa and Middle Vaitarna received more rain than last year but despite this the stock in lakes is comparatively less than in 2022Last year the stock was 88 per cent on July 30 The main reason for less stock is less rain in Bhatsa The lake was 85 per cent filled on the same day last year compared to only 66 per cent this year Middle Vaitarna filled up to 90 per cent this year but Upper Vaitarna filled up to merely 50 per cent despite more rainThe BMC imposed 10 per cent water cut since July 1 when the lakes had less than 7 per cent stock ldquoThe stock is only 74 per cent compared to 90 per cent last year and there is prediction of a dry spell in August Therefore a review will be taken after a week in August and then a decision will be declaredrdquo said Purushottam Malavade chief engineer of BMCrsquos hydraulic department
