Despite heavy downpour, lake water stock rises marginally, securing supply for 37 days

The city has been receiving incessant rainfall, but the stock of lakes supplying water to Mumbai increased by just 12 per cent in a week. This will ensure the entire city’s water requirements are met for 37 days. Last year, lake levels were the same and water cuts were withdrawn on August 2, after the lake stock reached 70 per cent.

The city has been receiving three-digit rainfall for the past few days but it hardly helped to improve the water stock. Out of seven lakes, only two, Vihar and Tulsi, are within city limits and their stock is only two per cent of the total amount of water required for Mumbai. So, while Tulsi is overflowing and Vihar is 90 per cent full, the combined stock hasn’t improved. The other five lakes, which are in Thane and Nashik, have been receiving light to moderate rain.
