Just before one would be bombarded with roses in every direction you look on Valentine&rsquo;s Day, comes the Rose Show at Maharashtra Nature Park in Dharavi.

This exhibition-cum-competition has been organised by the Mumbai Rose Society, a 40-year-old organisation that promotes rose growing as an occupation and a hobby in the city.

On display will be more than 2,000 roses that have come in from various parts of the country including ones flown in from Jabalpur and Kolkata.

Avinash Kubal, deputy director of Maharashtra Nature Park Society and president of Mumbai Rose Society informs us, &ldquo;Keeping in mind the climatic conditions, this is the right time for blooming of roses. The society has been organising rose shows every year, and there will be a lot of roses to see at this exhibition too.&rdquo;

Kubal tells us there are around 3,500 varieties of roses in the world. Some of the categories classified on the way they grow are Hybrid Tea, Floribunda and Miniatures. Roses are also classified based on their colour.

These include ones in solid colours such as dark red, violet, light pink, green roses, and then patterned varieties such as stripped, bicolour, spotted, and fragrant roses too.

The exhibition will give out prizes such as King of the Show, Queen of the Show, Prince and Princess of the Show. They also have a flower arrangement competition at this two-day exhibition. And if you have been enticed in the world of roses looking at all that is on display, then bring out your wallets for plants and other gardening requirements that will be on sale.
