Education has received a major shot in the arm in the BMC&rsquo;s new budget for 2014-15. The civic body has a provision of a whopping Rs 2,660.44 crore for education, which the BMC is going to use to attract more students to municipal schools and encourage education in the city. This is a major jump as last year the BMC had allocated Rs 2,115 crore for education.

As per the budget plans, a majority of the amount will be set aside to repair and reconstruct the old school buildings. Apart from that, officials have planned to convert about 250 regional schools into semi-English medium schools.
Additionally, in an attempt to protect plots which had been reserved for school from encroachments, the civic officials have announced that they will be building eight new municipal schools to add to the list of the 453 existing municipal schools.
And that&rsquo;s not all: Civic officials are also going to launch two new softwares, which will help the civic body in keeping a tab on the schools under their jurisdiction. They are going to introduce the Child Tracking System. This new system will have the data of each and every child from 0-14 years of age and will help officials see if the children are in school or not.
The second is Management Information System, which would enable the authorities to keep a close eye on the workings of the school and their day-to-day running. All the details of the school will be collated, such as uniforms, books, stationery provided, and this data will be available to the civic officials.
