The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has emphasized the importance of behaving responsibly while posting WhatsApp status, as it can be considered a mode of communication with known contacts. The court made this observation while dismissing a petition seeking to quash a case against a man for allegedly spreading hatred against a religious group through his WhatsApp status.
The division bench of Justices Vinay Joshi and Valmiki SA Menezes, in their order on July 12, mentioned that people often check the WhatsApp status of their contacts, and the purpose of such status is to convey something to those contacts.
