Thane Commissionerate reports 12,104 crimes in 2023 with 73 pc detection rate

A senior police official revealed on Tuesday that Thane Commissionerate in Maharashtra recorded a total of 12104 crimes in 2023 boasting a detection rate of 73 per centldquoAt least 12104 crimes were reported in the Thane Commissionerate in Maharashtra in 2023 of which 73 per cent of the offences have been detectedrdquo the police official saidIn 2022 as many as 11961 offences were reported in the limits of the commissionerate with a detection rate of 70 per cent and the number of crimes increased by 143 in 2023 the official saidAs per data shared by the additional commissioner crime Punjabrao Ugale Thane recorded 87 murder and 159 attempted murder cases in 2023 which is a slight decline from the previous years 93 and 140 cases respectivelyAt least 17 cases of dacoity and 581 robberies were reported in the commissionerate in 2023 and the detection rate had improved from 65 per cent to 78 per cent this year the data revealedCases of rioting went up to 231 in 2023 compared to the previous years 205 while 415 rape cases were registered compared to the previous years 432 it was statedThane Commissionerate includes Thane city Bhiwandi Kalyan Ambernath Ulhasnagar and Badlapur townsMeanwhile data from the National Crime Records Bureau NCRB has revealed an increase in cases of crimes against women and children in the financial capital city Mumbai and the state of Maharashtra The statistics from the 70th edition of the NCRBs annual report highlight a worrisome surge in criminal incidents during 2022Mumbai witnessed a rise in cases of crimes against women with a total of 6176 cases registered in 2022 compared to 2021s 5543 cases The rate of total crime against women stood at 725 per centThe majority of these cases were filed under Cruelty by Husband or his Relatives constituting 326 percent of the reported incidents Although the city has 786 percent chargesheet rate concerns linger over the safety of women in the metropolisOn a broader scale Maharashtra recorded 45331 cases of crimes against women in 2022 reflecting an 806 percent chargesheet rate Disturbingly the chargesheet rate for the state is higher than the national average raising questions about the efficiency of the criminal justice system in dealing with such cases The prevalent crime categories in the state were Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives 314 percent and Kidnapping and Abduction of Women 192 percentThe NCRB data also shed light on an alarming increase in crimes against children in both Mumbai and Maharashtra The total number of cases against children in Mumbai reached 3178 in 2022 as against 2762 in 2021 and 2248 in 2020 The predominant crime heads were Kidnapping and Abduction 563 percent and offenses under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 322 percent With inputs from PTI
