Upon dusk today, Muslims will climb up to their terrace and come out in the open to catch a glimpse of the crescent moon. The moon sighting signifies the first official day of Ramadan, and set forth the calendar for the most sacred month for Muslims. According to Islamic belief, it was in the month of Ramadan, that angel Gabriel came down and revealed the holy book of Quran to Prophet Mohammad. In order to commemorate the revelations, Muslims observe fast during this month.
One of the chief elements of fasting during Ramadan is the consumption of dates. The significance of dates is deep rooted in Islamic values and it can be found in every Muslim household. Date palms are the parent tree of the fruit which grow abundantly in tropical and desert climates, and are a staple diet for people inhabiting those regions. Additionally, it is a customary tradition to break the fast with dates as per prophet’s guidance.
