The movie, also starring Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, revolved around the relationship between a father and his daughter.
Irrfan played Rana, the owner of a taxi service in the Shoojit Sircar-directed slice-of-life movie. The actor calls "Piku" one of the best roles in his career.
"It is an absolute honour, I am so glad that the film has won hearts all over. Rana is definitely indebted to the audience.
This is another important character role of my life for which I am overwhelmed that it received a response like this," the actor said in a statement.
The "Jurassic World" star could not attend the ceremony in Melbourne as he is currently in Japan to shoot for a TV show, set after the World War II.
